While fall does not technically start until later in September, the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union's "fall" season runs from August through the end of October. This is the period for the MOU to document and compile their seasonal reports for the fall migration. After the traditionally sleepy bird watching months of June and July, things really perk up in August. We start to see many warblers, sparrows, and flycatchers on the move. Various fledglings are learning the ropes, and families of Ruffed Grouse are out and about. Hawks begin their southerly trek. Unrelated to birds, furry creatures such as the squirrels and chipmunks are busy caching food in preparation for the colder months ahead.
