August is a terrific month. After a relatively slow June and July, wildlife activity begins to pick up. During these midsummer days in northern Minnesota, we begin to see signs of the "fall" migration. Warblers start moving through in waves, as do the small flycatchers. Birds are out and about with the new generation in tow. Chipmunks are busy harvesting various seeds and berries. The fireweed also starts to bloom. The old adage is that once the top of the fireweed blooms, that means fall has arrived. Hopefully it will wait a little while longer to let us enjoy the waning days of summer.
